How to inspect a used car in China before buying

A practical checklist for remote buyers: documents, vehicle identity, condition, independent inspection and decision records.

01 / What matters

Start with evidence you can verify.

Ask for the VIN, registration status, seller identity, current photographs, mileage and any available maintenance or accident information. Compare those details across documents before paying for a site visit.

02 / In scope

What we cover

  • Check identity, title and export eligibility before condition.
  • Choose accident, mechanical or battery checks to match risk.
  • Keep the inspector’s original report and written exclusions.

03 / Before you proceed

The cheapest inspection is not always the best value.

For low-value vehicles, preliminary screening may rule out poor candidates. For expensive or complex cars, a wider third-party scope can be worthwhile. The buyer should approve the cost and make the final decision.

Official export requirements

A buyer’s optional pre-purchase condition check is not the same as the third-party product inspection report required for covered used-car export licence applications in China. Skipping an optional check does not remove the export requirement.

One common question

Can an inspection replace a purchase contract?

No. The report is evidence about a limited set of checks; the contract still needs accurate vehicle details, condition terms and responsibility allocation.
